Year In Review and My One Little Word for 2018

1 / 2 / 3 / 4

5 / 6 / 7 / 8

Happy New Year friends and I hope it’s off to a good start for all of you! Above I shared my favourite posts of 2017, if you click on the numbers below you will be taken to the specific post with all of the deets.  Although 2017 was full of milestones, weddings and important events I felt quite disorganized and unmotivated at times.  Hence I am refocussing in 2018 and using a helpful concept I tried a couple of years ago called One Little Word.

I think we all get this feeling of wanting to improve and make changes as we head into a new year.  I’m not a resolutions kinda girl but I certainly try to think of areas in my life I want to work on.  Way back in 2016 I wrote about the concept of One Little Word (#OLW) and I still like the idea of choosing a word to help guide you throughout the year.  I think of it as a motivational tool to reflect on when I feel I’m heading off course.

The word I choose is INVEST as I want to meaningfully invest in the people I love most and a goal I want to accomplish this year.  I broke it down into four main areas.  I wanted to share the gist of what I’m investing in this year to have a richer more fulfilling experience.

  1.  RELATIONSHIPS.  First and foremost I’m focussing on spending more quality time with my hubby and girls.  Then on spending more time with some extended family and a few close friends.  I want to invest in those relationships that mean the most to me and also with those that want to invest back.  Having those positive relationships that you can rely on is not only a source of joy but also an essential support system to have.
  2. FAITH.  Putting faith in God first is something I work on daily. It’s the one thing that has kept me grounded in the most adverse times I have faced.  It’s also what keeps me going on those days I feel alone, stressed, discouraged or whatever challenge I may be facing.
  3. PERSONAL GROWTH.  In this area I am focussed specifically on entrepreneurship.  I wrote here about the endeavour of starting  my own jewelry shop and this is a priority this year.  It has been overwhelming at times and I tend to get stuck focussing on day to day issues that lead me away from being able to fully focus on this venture.  That’s exactly why I need to intentionally invest more time into this to achieve a successful outcome.  Not in the sense of having an immediate flourishing business but rather getting it started and pouring my heart into something I love and feel so excited about.  I also want my girls to see they can follow their dreams and with hard work they can accomplish anything.  Modelling a balanced lifestyle for my girls is important to me. I don’t want to be a parent who is solely focussed on the role of parenthood that I lose my sense of self and pursuing my own passions.
  4. BEING PRESENT.  Yes this is something I continually work on and funny enough I was scrolling through Instagram and stumbled upon a quote that literally hit me like a ton of bricks, here it is:

Beware of destination addiction: The idea that happiness is in the next place, the next job, or even with the next partner.  UNTIL YOU GIVE UP THE IDEA THAT HAPPINESS IS SOMEWHERE ELSE, IT WILL NEVER BE WHERE YOU ARE.

As Oprah would say this was an “A-HA” moment for me.  I think I spent quite a bit of time in 2017 in this destination addiction. Sometimes I find myself daydreaming of things I’d rather be doing (you know like being on vacation, at the spa, a date night…well you get the picture) which impacts on the amount of effort I put into a situation and even how I interact with the people I am with.  I remind myself of this quote everyday and it has made a significant impact on my level of contentment.  I also put some unrealistic expectations for milestones last year and when those expectations fell a little flat or some people in my life forgot those events I felt hurt and disappointed.  So I am focussing on the happiness that is right before me, those that care about me most and this starts with having gratitude for all that I do have.

With these four areas of focus and that one little word to “Invest” in these areas I already feel differently and more energetic about this year.

Do you have an #OLW? Is there anything you do to have a fresh start in the new year? Would love to hear your ideas:)

Thanks for stopping by and reading!

Wow, great post! Empowering and powerful. I love this idea of one word and I like how you broke it down to apply to your own life. I too have been cleaning out my closet if you will of unnecessary people, things, etc and while it is hard, it is a necessary change so that I can make time and room for the people that do matter and for those things that I do enjoy doing. Happy 2018 friend and looking forward to what is ahead.

I love the your word of the year and the idea of “investing” and how it relates to your life. I am trying to be more focused on personal growth this year – and not as much of focused on social media and being distracted from my real life. I look forward to seeing your jewelry line.

Your one little word is a powerful one. I love every aspect of your life that you’re putting it too. I’ve also been guilty of wishing for what’s next instead of just being happy in the moment, such a great reminder!

Dear Marta, first of HAPPY 2018! I loved reading about your goals! Like you, I want my relationship with Christ to be #1! He’s all that really matters! And spending time with my loved ones is SO very important – I agree. Jaxson is already 9 months old and Kingston turned 6. I look at them and sometimes get sad! I need more quality time with them! But anyhow, CONGRATS on your jewelry endeavor! I am so very proud of you!! Need to get a piece from you!
    Have a wonderful weekend, love!

I love your list! Mine is very similar this year. I am totally guilty of dreaming of things I’d rather be doing as well. My goal is to live in the here and now more. Be more present.
